Synopsis

The Game of Thrones is a series and a set of novels called "A song of Ice and Fire", about nine noble families who fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros; all while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order, the Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and the icy horrors beyond "The Wall". [1]

Historical Comparison

According to Alex Gendler, a Freelance Script Writer and Editor for Ted education, the Game of Thrones central drama is inspired by "The War of Roses".  The war of the roses was a feud between King Edward III descendants - the Lancaster's, inspiration for the Lannister's, and the York's; inspiration for the Starks; about who amongst them had the rightful claim to the throne.
